FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Six-Time Olympian Joins National Team Coaching Staff

Ottawa, ON — May 13, 2025

The Shooting Federation of Canada (SFC) is proud to announce the appointment of three new National Team Coaches: six-time Olympian and seven-time World Champion Susan Nattrass, OC, PhD, long-standing para and able-bodied coach Gale Stewart, and recently retired high-performance athlete Richard McBride.

These appointments reflect SFC’s commitment to building a world-class coaching team to support Canadian athletes at every level of the sport.

“This is an incredibly exciting time for the Shooting Federation of Canada,” said Terry Dillon, Interim SFC CEO. “Susan, Richard, and Gale bring decades of experience, deep knowledge of the sport, and a passion for athlete development. We are confident their leadership will elevate our national program.”

Susan Nattrass OC, PhD, one of Canada’s most accomplished sport shooters, brings over 55 years of competitive trapshooting experience to her new role as Trap Coach.  A veteran of multiple Olympics and medalist at World, Pan American, and Commonwealth Games, she has been a trailblazer for women in the sport throughout her career. Beyond her competitive career, Nattrass has extensive coaching experience and serves as the Head Shotgun Instructor for the ISSF Coaching Academy.  She is widely respected as both a mentor and international ambassador for the sport.

Richard McBride joins the coaching staff as the Skeet Coach. A top competitor for Canada, he represented our country at World Championships, Pan American Games, and Commonwealth Games, where he won a silver medal. He brings valuable experience, competitive insight, and a deep commitment to the sport.

Gale Stewart, known for his work with para sport shooting athletes, will expand his responsibilities to serve as the Rifle Coach. With over 40 years of experience, Stewart has coached at multiple Paralympic Games, World Championships, and World Cups. As a competitor, he won a silver medal at the World Championships and a bronze medal at the Pan American Games.

These three appointments join current coaches Lisa Borgerson, Pistol Coach; Richard Lanning, Junior Coach; and Chanel Spicer, ID Coach.  With the new coaching team in place and their combined expertise, commitment to athlete development, and passion for the sport, the SFC is positioning its athletes for sustained success on the international stage.
