The Recreational Target Shooting (RTS) Program is the Shooting Federation of Canada’s introductory program for target shooting in Canada, designed to help participants safely learn, practice, and progress within ISSF target shooting disciplines. The program provides a structured yet flexible pathway that emphasizes safety, inclusivity, proper technique, and knowledge of the rules, allowing shooters of all ages and abilities to advance at their own pace while tracking improvement and celebrating progress.
Target shooters advance at their own pace. This program emphasizes safety, inclusivity, and proper technique and knowledge of the rules of the discipline. The program is guided by the values of Accessibility, Fair Play, Respect and the Spirit of Sportsmanship.
RTS strongly encourages athletes of all ages and abilities to participate. While it is user-friendly for those just starting, the thrill of advancement will not be lost on even the most advanced shooters.
You can shoot on any indoor or outdoor range, or for air events – any location that has a safe backstop or appropriate bullet trap.
Match Directors should consider that a recreational target shooting program for the general public that covers the Olympic shooting disciplines can be a fun and engaging way to promote shooting sports and physical fitness. By adhering to the ISSF rules and regulations and enforcing strict safety measures, participants can learn the basics of shooting and compete against each other in a safe and controlled environment.
How to Get Started!
- Ensure your club is an affiliated member of SFC
- Start small and involve others!
- Have one volunteer act as the Program Lead. They will be the person to track progress and order supplies from SFC and then award the badge levels to the participants as they advance.
- Connect with the Director of Sport Development for the RTS Program Guide. This has the levels broken out and the links to order the required supplies and other valuable information.
- We suggest that each Program Lead connects regularly with all participants of their club.
- Remember to always shoot safely and have fun.For More information on starting the program at your club please email Lisa Roddie
